Book Cover Design

Conclusion

1. I decided to redesign the book cover for Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I chose this book because it is my favorite book in the Hunger Games Trilogy and I also thought it would be fun to redo its book cover because of what happens in the story!

2. I used the fact that Katniss was the Mockingjay, the girl on fire. She was the girl who had everyone's eyes on her. The rest of the details were sort of a play on the book's actual title.

3. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to use Kang Seul-gi on my cover. I wanted to use an idol for my design, and she came to mind immediately. Her photoshoot from her new album, 28 Reasons, reminded me of Katniss, the main character in Catching Fire. I saved multiple photos from the shoot. I then looked around for fire textures and fonts I wanted to use. After that, I saved the photos to my laptop and opened them up onto my Artboards. I played around with sizing before deciding on that photo for the front cover. I added the wings in, changed their brightness, and adjusted them using Curves. I placed them behind a clipping mask of Seul-gi, so they would appear to be her own wings. I then placed the fire PNGs I found onto her hands and changed the opacity to 88%. After that, I followed a 20-minute tutorial on how to create metallic text for the title. I used the same effect for her name. I added an 'About the Author' section for realism. I added a bow on the spine as well as the Mockingjay logo, similar to the original cover's spine. I also added a burned paper on the back cover as if the book was 'catching fire'. I created a mockup of it and saved them both.

4. The easiest part was what book I wanted to do. I love The Hunger Games. The hardest was picking what fonts to use and how to create gradients.

5. I think I exceeded this time. I've never took that much time to create a title before. I also created the spine and flap gradients by myself, trying to match it to the front cover. I spent a long time working on this, too.
